Range Etiquette: Do’s and Don’ts for Beginners

Firearms range etiquette is critical to maintaining a safe and professional environment, whether you are a new shooter or an experienced one. At the core of all safe gun handling are the four primary firearms safety rules, which must be followed at all times: treat every firearm as if it is loaded, never point the muzzle at anything you are not willing to destroy, keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire, and be sure of your target and what is beyond it. These rules are the foundation of all range operations and, when followed consistently, prevent the vast majority of negligent discharges and serious injuries. Building on these principles, shooters must listen and respond immediately to Range Safety Officer commands, maintain strict muzzle discipline by keeping firearms pointed downrange at all times, and practice proper trigger discipline, especially during loading, reloading, and holstering. Wearing appropriate safety gear such as eye and ear protection, is mandatory, and clear communication with others on the range helps prevent confusion and potential hazards. Shooters should also inspect their firearms and ammunition before use and remain in their assigned lane to avoid creating unsafe conditions. Equally important are the things you should never do on a range: never handle a firearm during a cold range when people are downrange, never sweep others with the muzzle, never keep your finger on the trigger when not actively shooting, and never ignore commands from the Range Safety Officer. Unsafe or unauthorized equipment should not be used, distractions should be avoided, and under no circumstances should you turn around with a firearm unless it has been properly cleared and made safe. Above all, do not rush—most range incidents occur due to complacency or haste. Staying disciplined, aware, and deliberate in your actions ensures not only your safety but the safety of everyone around you, reinforcing the reality that you are responsible for every round you fire.
